New Florida law allows surgeons to perform C-sections outside of hospitals
Some medical professionals are alarmed about a new Florida state law that allows surgeons to perform cesarean deliveries – or C-sections – outside of hospitals. Florida is the first state to allow doctors to perform the procedure outside of hospitals. “We, Florida’s hospitals, have significant concerns about the health and safety of moms and babies,” said Mary Mayhew, Florida Hospital Association President and CEO. Supreme Court will take up state bans on gender-affirming care for minors
The Supreme Court on Monday jumped into the fight over transgender rights, agreeing to hear an appeal from the Biden administration seeking to block state bans on gender-affirming care. The justices’ action comes as Republican-led states, including Florida, have enacted a variety of restrictions on health care for transgender people, school sports participation, bathroom usage and drag shows. The administration and Democratic-led states have extended protections for transgender people, including a new federal regulation that seeks to protect transgender students. [Source: WUSF]

After Florida blocked local heat standards, federal officials tout national effort
It’s summer, Florida is hot and workers don’t have local rules to regulate working conditions to prevent heat illness. That’s because the state has blocked cities and counties in Florida from setting those rules. So workers in construction, agriculture and other industries are looking elsewhere for help. That help could come from the federal government. U.S. Acting Secretary of Labor Julie Su recently visited Broward County to talk about an upcoming proposal by the Department of Labor that would create a national heat standard. [Source: WLRN]

Florida congressman co-sponsors new bills to eliminate burn pits and help vets
Veterans groups say exposure to the toxic fumes has left thousands of men and women with chronic health issues, including breathing problems and cancer. It’s also blamed for many deaths. Florida Congressman Gus Bilirakis is Vice Chairman of the House Veterans Affairs Committee, and he’s one of the sponsors of two bills aimed at dealing with the lasting effects of burn pits.  [Source: Yahoo News]

Hillsborough Mosquito Management working to prevent dengue fever from spreading
Hillsborough County’s Mosquito Management Service is working around the clock after a locally transmitted case of dengue fever was detected in Hillsborough County on Saturday. “Local transmission, though it is pretty rare. In this area, it has been several years since the last local transmission,” David Fiess with Hillsborough County Mosquito Management Services said. The fact that it is locally transmitted means a mosquito in Hillsborough County has the virus and the potential to spread it to other mosquitoes and people. [Source: ABC Action News]

The company also said Thursday that it expects to begin notifying individuals or patients in late July. › Opinion: Strong hospitals give families comfort and peace of mind
‘Strengthening hospitals is crucial to ensure that families across Florida can remain healthy and safe.’ Hospitals are typically the last place any of us want to find ourselves. Usually, a visit to the doctor means something is wrong. When I noticed a swollen lymph node, the last news I expected from my casual checkup was to be told I had developed stage 2 breast cancer. Still, even in the midst of this life-changing diagnosis, I felt comfortable and confident due in large part to my local hospital providers who prioritized my comfort and care throughout my cancer journey.
› A new Florida law allows spouses to live in veterans’ care facilities
Spouses of military members can now live in veterans’ care facilities. Gov. Ron DeSantis signed the legislation (HB725) in a press conference Thursday at Baldomero Lopez State Veterans’ Nursing Home in Land O’ Lakes. “I think the veterans will appreciate it, the spouses will appreciate it,” DeSantis said. “I’ve said for years that spouses serve and need to be appreciated.” The law, which will go into effect July 1, will put spouses fifth in the priority order of admission. Veterans with peacetime service are fourth.
