LEWES, DE – A streamlined process for Food Trucks on public property in Lewes may be on the way. At this week’s city council meeting, members are slated to discuss and potentially vote on an ordinance aimed at providing a pathway for more food trucks to operate during non-profit events.
While food trucks are, and will remain, permitted on private property, accessing public spaces requires a the organizer to seek approval from the mayor and city council. To simplify this process, city officials are proposing guidelines for a streamlined application system that would be routed directly to the city manager.
Some residents express concerns about the potential overcrowding of already limited space.
“I don’t really know where we would put them in Lewes, I feel like it’s a waste of space – we already have so many restaurants,” said Makena Stahl.
Other neighbors, like Linda Catts, say they see the potential concerns about competition with concession stands and restaurant but believes that sticking to nonprofit events would keep the balance.
“If you’re having a festival and you’re over here at the park – why not? Line them up!” she suggested.
While certain areas like Savannah Beach and the Roosevelt Inlet will remain restricted, other public spaces, such as the Little League complex, are not. Also in place are restrictions on certain thinner city streets.
You can find the full draft ordinance and list of restricted areas here.
