ABC’s “The Day After’s” aired on Sunday, Nov. 20, 1983. It was the TV event of the year, preceded by weeks of hype and worry about how it would affect viewers, especially kids. It remains television’s highest-rated movie. The Washington Post ran TV critic Tom Shales’s thoughtful, 2,150-word review on the Friday before it aired. “Everyone should watch it,” he wrote. “No one will be able to forget it.” Some 38 million American households tuned in (about 100 million viewers).
