RIP Shah Ji!
A great man, RIP sir
But he is best remembered for a headline he gave as the news editor of Daily Azad: “Idhar Tum, Udhar Hum”
You mean Idhar Hum, Udhar Tum.
RIP, respected Abbas Athar.
ET, why have you used the notorious “Idher ham udher tum” slogan?
inna lillah he wa inna alehe rajeoon
ajb azad mard tha……., great journalist indeed, end of an institution
we will miss him dearly
@ roni shakal pl let little zulfiqar come to the fore and defend his grandfathers legacy
My heartfelt condolences. He will be deeply missed by friends and foes alike. Many innovations in journalism can be traced to him. His creativity found expression in some memorable pieces of poetry. Nek dil larkio and Bhutto ki Beti are the prime examples. No idelogue of left or right, Shah ji had a distaste for obscurantism. His writings and perspective on life is perhaps best described in the absurdist tradition. I felt this ever more when he made me the subject of one of his columns. Perhaps somebody said it for him: “True absurdism is not less but more real than reality.”
He had specially encouraged me to write a weekly economic column for his newest venture, the Express. He never forgave me for discontinuing it in the November of Injustice, when I lost the urge to write.
May his soul rest in peace.
The news says “But he is best remembered for a headline he gave as the news editor of Daily Azad: “Idhar Tum, Udhar Hum” – a line that Zulfikar Ali Bhutto is said to have said to Sheikh Mujeebur Rehman during their last meeting in Dhaka. This is now remembered as one of Pakistani journalism’s most powerful headlines.” Only in Pakistan an unauthorized statement without any record or proof “a line that Zulfikar Ali Bhutto is said to have said to Sheikh Mujeebur Rehman during their last meeting in Dhaka” can be believed as a page from holy book and make a journalist known by that as if all his word was not worth anything. This false and misleading statement is one of those things that were spread for taking the army invasion of East Pakistan. No wonder Bengali leadership is still not upset with PPP or ZAB but with the actual actors who committed atrocities. Last coalition govt included MQM, and ANP to be inclusive and give representation to all provinces of the federation. Mujeeb wanted to form the govt of one province only and other provinces wanted the representation as well. Which is a part of a democratic process not the army invasion.
May God Bless you. i recited a fatiha !
RIP! Great man…….
I used to read his Urdu column “kankarian” (pebbles) growing up when he was still at Nawa-i-Waqt, but I had never known that he went so far back as a journalist. The idhar tum, udhar hum headline is certainly iconic for so powerfully capturing the dysfunctional dynamic of politics in 1971. Sad that he’s now no more.
