Art exhibition to explore bond between humans and technology – Gulf News

Three-month exhibition at New York University Abu Dhabi will feature work of 15 contemporary artists from around the world
Abu Dhabi: The complex and much-debated relationship between humans and the evergrowing reach of technology will be the main focus of New York University Abu Dhabi’s (NYUAD) upcoming art exhibition in September.
The exhibition — Invisible Threads — will run for three months and will feature the work of 15 contemporary artists from around the world. The exhibition is a part of the university’s continued work in promoting and discussing issues that affect people globally.
“The exhibition will be exploring the universal theme of technology and how individuals are using it every day, as well as the anxiety and emotions that come from our use of these devices,” said Bana Kattan, co-curator for the exhibition.
Kattan explained that several different forms of artworks will be displayed, each with their own unique take and angle on the subject.
The theme of how technology affects human behaviour is aimed at generating a discussion among people.
“The goal is to create a dialogue; our hope is that the art works will make visitors think about their daily use of technology. As a person born and raised in Abu Dhabi, I think this subject is important to talk about because the population of UAE is tech-savvy and globally connected as well.”
The aim of the exhibition, said Kattan, is also to arrive at a balance on the issue of technology — while it has the potential to leave some people feeling paranoid, it also provides many benefits.
Kattan is positive on the exhibition’s contribution to the growing art scene in Abu Dhabi, which she noted was on the rise.
“The UAE art scene is growing at a remarkable rate and it’s because the audiences are hungry for art. Every time we have had an event, it received plenty of positive reactions,” she said.
“Art is a good and different way of talking about an issue — what makes contemporary art relevant is that important topics are being explored through this medium,” she added.
